The Department of Mathematics of the Bengaluru City University, situated at Central College Campus is one of the oldest centres of higher mathematics in the country. It has a history of over 137 years. It all started in the year 1885 when the British started a modest school called the ‘Bangalore High School’ with five students after some leading citizens of the city petitioned the British. In 1916, the desire of many of the citizens of Mysore was sated when the Central College in Bengaluru came into existence. Right from its early days, Central College was essentially a science campus and thus housed the department of Mathematics. The department was integral part of University of Madras, University of Mysore and Bangalore University and now leading source of Bengaluru City University. Befitting its locale in Bengaluru, the department has attained a place for itself on the national and international maps of Mathematics world because of the significant research contributions made by faculty members over the years. The objective of the department is to impart quality education to those seeking admission to MSc and PhD programmes, promote theoretical and applied research, publish original works, conduct funded scientific projects and develop interaction with other departments of the university, R & D establishments, industries and other organizations.
The department has the novelty of teaching students both in pure and applied Mathematics and guiding research students in both the disciplines. Periodically, the department organizes national/ international conferences/seminars/workshops on the thrust areas of research interests pursued.
Vision
To strive for excellence in education for the realization of a vibrant and inclusive society through knowledge creation and dissemination
